Would you like to see our outdoor Christmas light display? Pictures don’t do justice, but I hope they give you a good idea. This is the first year we went all out. I started planning in September. I chose mostly white lights because I was concerned about a lack of cohesion. Once it was up I learned that a white light display shows up brighter than using colors, even though our bulbs are ‘soft’. We do have some yellow lights on the shrubs by the garage doors and around the windows, but you can’t tell from the photos.
I put red lights on the little shrubs behind the tall trees so they would stand out separate. You can see that in the bottom left corner of this photo. Working together, it ended up taking us a total of 4 afternoons to put this up. We started in November before and after Thanksgiving. The weather was warm and comfortable. Perfect for outside chores. We won’t disassemble the nativity, angels and reindeer once the season is over. We have plenty of room in our basement to store them as is. I’ll just throw a plastic sheet over them. When it’s time to take it down, it’s going to be freezing outside. I sure hope it comes down faster than it took putting it up. I know we’ll be moving faster!
The gutters, garage and front door have those old fashioned c9 light strands. I know they use more electricity and will cost us more to run, but they look so beautiful. We keep the lights on for 6 hours each evening from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Next year we’d like to run them across the peaks over the bedroom windows. Unless I faint when we get the electric bill later this month!
My favorite area is along the walkway. It’s so bright at night that you could sit outside and read a book. It feels so ‘warm’ along the walkway.I think I nailed this area as far as lights go, but having a Christmas tree inside showing through the window would really set the mood. That window is our dining room, so I would have to purchase a very narrow one. Hubby has moved the wires going across the walkway to a safer place since this photo was taken.
We didn’t have a theme in mind. But due to our choices, I guess you could say it’s a Christian theme. Many of our neighbors have plenty of Santa’s and Snowmen. Hubby wants to add 3 wise men next year, and I want more angels. Those little reindeer could act as a goat and lamb. Yep, we’re already planning next year’s display. I think it’s the neighborhood. There are parts of our street that as you drive along it looks like a town in a Hallmark Christmas movie.
Next year I want to make an easy diy ‘JOY’ sign for the Christmas light display. And maybe some lights on the mailbox. I know it’s the Christmas spirit of the neighborhood that has us so fired up. We don’t have near the amount of what many others have, but we’re the only ‘white light’ house. Many homes have multiple blow up characters. We wanted to stay a little more traditional.
